Chapter Fifteen

Mark awoke suddenly. He glanced around the room, wondering what had awakened him. Jack was still asleep on the floor next to the bed, wiggling his nose and working his paws as though he was in the middle of a dream.

A dream. Mark realized he’d been dreaming about Kiki, and she was laughing that spontaneous, adorable laugh of hers. People in his family mostly chuckled. He’d never thought about it before.

Stretching his hand toward the other side of his queen-sized bed, he wished, for the first time ever, there was someone besides Jack waking up with him.

Just this once. Think of it as exercise.

How many times in his life would he have loved to have heard that from a woman? No strings. Just some hot sex. But when Kiki said it, it felt as though she’d punched him, and he’d been hurt and angry…and still hot for her.

Kiki…Kristina. It seemed like every hour or so since he’d met her he’d had some new revelation about himself or his life. This hour, it was how much he liked the sound the letter “K” made. Something inside tried to tell him he’d had a much bigger epiphany, but the “K” thing was all he could handle at the moment.

He was back to thinking he should take Chuck’s suggestion and go to a shrink. For once, he really needed to talk to someone and couldn’t think of a soul he could confide in, and certainly, no one who would give him trustworthy advice. His life was an emotional desert compared to Kiki’s and Chris’s. Mark wasn’t even close to his sisters, not that he’d noticed before he started hanging around Miss Villanueva.

There was one person he could always count on, though.

“Jack, come up here.”

Jack was instantly awake. As he hopped up onto the bed, he pounced on Mark’s midsection—causing him to mutter a curse word—but made up for it with a big wet kiss to his cheek and eyelid.

“Yeah, you’re a good boy,” Mark said as Jack flopped down against him, writhing around until his back was as close to Mark’s side as caninely possible. Mark scratched his tummy with one hand, as he reached out and placed the other on the spare pillow. It could be Kiki’s pillow, if last night hadn’t been a “one-time-only” thing. He didn’t even think she’d mind being awakened by lots of slobbery kisses—Jack’s or his.

Less than thirty minutes later, Mark found himself in his car, driving a familiar route. He’d never thought of himself as a plotter, but as he’d lain in bed that morning, staring at the empty pillow, he’d managed to hatch a plan. It wasn’t much of one, really, and he knew James Bond would have found it downright Mickey Mouse, but he had to spend more time with Kiki. Maybe a lot of time with Kiki. He needed to get her back into bed, and something more than that, but his thinking was still pretty limited in that area.

So, now he
